SALT BOX

"Boite a sel" (salt box) - fariniere (for flour)
verrier (glass rack) - estanier (shelves)

Small, functional pieces of furniture, they came out from the XVIth century onwards. They were usually hung from the ceiling in the main room of the house (dining room, kitchen).

The salt box (saliero) is a small piece of furniture with a lid where salt was kept. In the bottom part, it had a drawer for the spices.

The "farinière" was used to put flour and the food that was going to be fried into. Once the sliding door was shut, it was shaken.

The glass rack (veriau) is a piece of furniture that hung on a wall and where glass objects ; jugs, oil lamps and small glasses were stored.

"L'estanié" is a shelf set made up of a number of shelves, used to stock everyday objects. A dresser was a big "estanié" which also hung from the wall. It was used to put pretty pottery objects on.
